Why "هادا الكِتاب" is not a finished sentence
One letter decides whether you've said a whole sentence or only half of one. Compare these two.
Phrases
Without "ال" the noun is indefinite — "a book" — and Arabic needs no word for "is", so those two words are already a statement.
With "ال" you've said "this book". That's a label, not a claim. You've pointed at something and said nothing about it, and the listener is still waiting.
