كان لازِم

Should have

Putting كان in front of لازم and مفروض to talk about the past

You already know "لازِم" and "مَفرُوض" for what has to happen. Put "كان" in front of either of them and you move the whole thing into the past, which is how Levantine says should have.

"كان لازِم" is the stronger of the two, closer to had to. "كان مَفرُوض" is what was supposed to happen, and carries a little more disappointment.
