مَعليش

Saying no politely

Turning something down without it landing badly

A flat "لا" to an invitation is blunt. What people actually do is apologise, give a reason, and leave the door open — usually in that order.

Phrases

Turning down food or drink

Refusing once is not enough — you'll be offered again, and that's expected on both sides.
