كان يِحكِي
Was doing, had done
Putting كان in front of another verb
"كان" in front of a second verb shifts that verb one step further back. In front of a present-tense verb it gives was doing; in front of a past-tense one, had done.
Phrases
Only "كان" changes for the person — the verb after it agrees too, but it's "كان" that carries the tense. Get "كُنت" right and the rest follows.
